Parent Meeting Scheduled

Hi everyone,

I reserved the small meeting room upstairs in the library for Monday, September 19 from 7-8:30 pm for our next parent meeting.  Really hope lots of people can make it.  There’s a lot to discuss, including recent developments in home study administration, assessments, etc.  as well as a request for information about extracurricular activities for homeschoolers.

We have a game day scheduled for next Tuesday, September 13, 1-4 pm in the Fox Room.

Any interest in field trip to Maritime Museum mentioned in an earlier post?  Anyone? Bueller?

Anybody thinking about upcoming year?

Hi all,

I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to think about some homeschool activity for this year, even though it’s still pretty early in August.  With that in mind, I reserved the Fox Room on Tuesday afternoons again, and this year we have it every week!  So, our tentative plan is to alternate Game Days with co-op/educational opportunities or presentations when people want to offer them.  So put Tuesday afternoons from 1-4 on your calendar, beginning September 6.  Hope to see you there.  The first one will definitely be a Game Day. Bring board or card games with you.  Kids of all ages will be there.  Some parents will probably hang out too.

We haven’t made a plan for Parent Meetings at this time.  They were not well attended last  year, and I have a lot on my plate.   I’m willing to set them up for this year, and I’d plan to attend if others want to have them, but at the moment I don’t see a lot of demand for them.  If you want to have these meetings, please speak up (via comment or email) asap.

I have been in touch with a few places about field trips.  Is anyone interested in attending a field trip to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for the following program?

Digging, Diving and Documenting: The Process of Nautical Archaeology  Discover Lake Champlain’s rich legacy of shipwrecks and the evolving strategies to preserve, document and manage them. In this hands-on multi-disciplinary program, students learn about the techniques and challenges of documenting underwater sites, and discover the importance of artifact location on board the gunboat Philadelphia II. Learn about the equipment used in underwater exploration and the techniques used in our laboratory to conserve artifacts removed from the lake. Students will “dive” in and become underwater archaeologists while documenting a “shipwreck”. This program recreates the process of nautical archaeology as realistically as can be done without going underwater.

If you are interested, please comment or email me.  This trip is geared towards kids in grades 4+.  There is a fee involved, which is $5 per child.  I believe adults would also have to pay $5, and the program lasts 2.5 hours.  I have not scheduled a date at this time, but will as soon as I have an idea of how many participants would be involved.  This would very likely take place on a Thursday, if that helps.

We would like to set up a “not back to school” picnic at a state park/lake (Maybe Echo).  A date has not been selected, but speak up if you’d like to participate.

I have been watching Castleton’s website for news of their Arts Reach offerings, but nothing has been updated for this year.  I will continue to check on that and will make arrangements for our group again this year if people are interested.

Lastly, there have to be new homeschoolers out there in this area.  If you know of people just starting out who are looking for information or ways to meet other homeschoolers, please point them to this website and feel free to forward emails I send you.  No need to ask me – I am happy to support and include new homeschoolers and get more people involved in our little community.

That’s all for now.  Except this one last thought…I am not “in charge” of this group.  If you want an active homeschool community, please feel free to jump in at any time with ideas or just set something up and invite people.  I keep hearing of people wanting to know if this group “still exists” or if “they are doing anything” (meaning us!) and I don’t really understand where this concept comes from.  Nothing in a community happens without the active participation of a number of people.  We’d love to have your participation!  It’s not *my* group, it’s *ours*, so please don’t hesitate to speak up, plan something, invite people, spread the word, ask for help, whatever it is you want to see happen.  And if you want it put on the website, just email me.  The website wasn’t updated a lot last year, and that is partially because nobody asked me to put anything on it.  I’m more than happy to use this web presence to publicize what I can, so let me know what you want put on it!  Thanks!  I’m looking forward to a fun year with a great group of homeschoolers!

December update

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you know that the parents meeting is coming up on Dec 14 at 7 pm.  As usual, it will be held in the small upstairs meeting room at the Rutland Free Library.  My son has a short concert also at 7 pm, so I will not be at the meeting until at least 7:30, but it can start without me!  If you arrive and the room is still locked, please see whoever is at the help desk in the main library, and they can unlock the room for you.

We don’t have a specific co-op topic this month, so we will have a game day/craft day/holiday celebration instead, Dec 22 from 1-4 pm.  It will be very low key and fun!  Bring games, craft supplies/ideas, and a holiday snack to share.  I will try to be there at 12:30 to set up.  We have the room until 4 pm but we have cleanup time scheduled until 4:30.

I have done all the library room reservations for the Parent Meetings, Co-ops, and Game Days from January through May.  I have added them all to the google calendar, but the dates are below if you’d like to put them on your calendar!

Parent Meetings will be on the first Monday of the month (except February, which is the second Monday) at 7 pm in the upstairs small meeting room at the library.  Dates are:  January 4, February 8, March 7, April 4, and May 2.

Game Day will be the second Tuesday of the month, from 1-4 pm, in the Fox Room at the library.  We actually can arrive at 12:30 for setup and have until 4:30 for cleanup.  Dates are: Jan 12, Feb 9, Mar 8, Apr 12, May 10.

Co-op will be the fourth Tuesday of the month, from 1-4 pm, in the Fox Room at the library.  We actually can arrive at 12:30 for setup and have until 4:30 for cleanup.  Dates are: Jan 26, Feb 23, Mar 22, Apr 26.  I didn’t schedule one for May, for some reason.

October update

Hi Everyone,

Reminders for October:

The parents meeting is October 19 at 7 pm in the upstairs small meeting room at the Rutland Free Library.

This Tuesday (tomorrow) at 1 pm, we are having a game day in the Fox Room at the Library.  Please join us, and bring your favorite board or card games.  We would love to know if you’re coming, so RSVP by comment or email.

October’s co-op date has been changed to October 20, and is tentatively going to be a hands-on presentation by VEEP on “Modeling Climate Science“.  You can get some introductory information here.  Please RSVP by comment or email if you plan to attend.

Thursdays are still park days at Meadow Street.  Generally, people are there from 12-2.

Lisa has arranged a field trip to the Wallingford Forge on October 28, Wednesday, at 2 pm.  Please RSVP by comment or email if you would like to attend.  Thank you, Lisa!

Arts Reach and our upcoming week

Hi everyone,

I heard back from the Castleton Arts Reach Coordinator.  Unfortunately, we were only able to get tickets for one show, which was the Flamenco Vivo show in November.  I’m especially disappointed that we couldn’t get tickets for Toying with Science,  but they did have a huge response for that show and said they hope to bring it back next year as well.  Please mark your calendars for Nov 17 at 10 am at the Casella Theater for Flamenco Vivo.  If you’re unsure if you had expressed interest in that show, email me and ask.

We have a Parents Meeting coming up next Monday, September 21.  7 pm at the Rutland Free Library, in the small meeting room upstairs.

As the Montshire held their fall homeschoolers day on this past Thursday, I don’t know if anyone made it to Park Day at Meadow Street.  It will be on for this coming week, though,  and I know some of us have plans to be there.

On Tuesday, Sept 29, we have our first fall co-op, which will be held up at Bonny’s home in North Chittenden.  We will be doing soapmaking, so if you are at all interested in chemistry, please plan to attend!  It is a lot of fun to make soap, almost magical.  If you are interested, we really do need to know ASAP for planning purposes, so please either comment on this post or send us an email.

I think that’s about it for now.   Hope to see you all soon!

Fall plans

Hi everyone.

Things are starting to come together for our little group.  I thought it might be a good idea to post an update even though not everything is totally set in stone.  Here is some basic progress info for things we’ve got planned for fall.

Co-op – will be held on the 4th Tuesday of the month, from 1-4 pm.  At the last parents meeting, we talked about having monthly co-ops instead of bi-weekly.  Bonny is going to host the first co-op, a soapmaking class, and I hope to have details for that up soon.  Co-op may be held at the Rutland Free Library, or elsewhere, depending on the offering.  Soapmaking will be held at Bonny’s house in North Chittenden.  Other co-ops we are planning to offer in the fall include cider pressing (and other apple-processing ideas), a program with Tom Estill, and a program hosted by VEEP (Vermont Energy Education Program).

Game Day – will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, from 1-4 pm, in the Fox Room at the Rutland Free Library.  We will have a variety of games including Chess, Munchkin, Ticket to Ride, Transamerica, Catan, Magic, and anything else anyone wants to bring or play.

Arts Reach – I have sent in our ticket requests and will evidently be sent an email in late September with information about what we will be able to attend.  I will let you know when I receive the information from their coordinator.

Park Day – will be on Thursdays at Meadow Street Park in Rutland, from approximately 12-2 pm or whenever anyone wants to go until they want to leave!

Montshire Homeschoolers Day – is next Thursday, September 17, from 10-3 pm.  So some of us may not be at park day!

Field Trips – Trish offered to try to set up a trip to the Rokeby Museum, which offers a discount for larger groups.  Please comment if you would be interested in this, so she has an idea how many people to plan for.  Janet tried to set up a trip to True Temper in Wallingford, but unfortunately they do not allow visitors in their facility.  We are also trying to set up a geology walk in Pine Hill Park.  If you have other ideas for trips or would like to try to set something up, leave a comment and let us know!

Parents Meeting – the next meeting is September 21, at 7 pm in the small upstairs meeting room at the Rutland Free Library.  Subsequent meetings will be held October 19, November 16, and December 14.  We hope to see you there!

Hi all.

I have scheduled the next parents meeting for Monday, September 21 at 7 pm in the small meeting room (upstairs) at the Rutland Free Library.

We haven’t set a schedule for co-op yet, as people’s fall schedules are still forming.  At the moment, one of the most promising days seems to be Tuesdays.  If you’d like to comment with thoughts about availability, that would be great.  I have heard from a few people but not everyone.  I’m sure it will be next to impossible to find something that will work for everyone every time, but we will do our best to find a time that works for most people.

Castleton has set their schedule for Arts Reach.  I will coordinate with the contact there.  In the meantime please use this link to check the offerings and let me know which ones your family is interested in.  You can do that either through email or through the comments section below. I will need to know the number of adults, number of children, and ages or grades of children (I believe Castleton asked me for grades last year.)

Bonny has offered to teach a soapmaking class for the first co-op in September.  She will host this at her home in Chittenden.  We have not solidified plans (especially since we don’t even have a day yet!) but it would be helpful to know how many people would be interested in participating.

Everyone was interested in a “not back to school” picnic/lake day/gathering for sometime in September.  Stay tuned.

We want to restart park days and potentially a bi-weekly game day also.

That’s about all for now.  See you at the next parents meeting!
